Best Free SEO Tools in 2026: 21 Tools That Cost Nothing
Updated: juillet 2026
Most "free SEO tools" lists are really lists of paid tools with a trial attached. This one is not. Every tool below has a genuinely free tier you can use indefinitely without a credit card — and where a free tier has real limits, we say exactly what they are.
We use most of these daily to run this site. Here is the honest version.
How we picked
A tool made this list only if it meets all four criteria:
- Genuinely free — a permanent free tier, not a 7-day trial that expires.
- No credit card to get started.
- Actually useful at the free tier — not a teaser that shows you three results and asks for money.
- Still maintained in 2026 — we checked that each one is alive and shipping.
Google's own free tools (start here)
If you only ever use four SEO tools, use these. The data comes straight from the search engine you are trying to rank in, which no third-party tool can fully replicate.
1. Google Search Console
The single most important free SEO tool that exists. It shows you the queries you actually rank for, your impressions, clicks and average position, which pages are indexed and which are not, and the crawl errors Google hit on your site. If a page is not in Search Console, it is not in Google. Free, unlimited, first-party. Our guide on finding broken links in Google Search Console covers the crawl-error side in detail.
2. Google Analytics 4
Free traffic and behaviour analytics. GA4 is not loved for its interface, but it answers the question Search Console cannot: what people did after they landed. Pair the two and you can see which rankings actually earn engaged sessions rather than bounces.
3. Google Keyword Planner
Free with any Google Ads account — you do not need to run a campaign. Volume figures are shown in wide buckets unless you spend money, so treat them as directional. It remains the best free source for discovering keyword variations at scale.
4. Google Trends
Free, and the only tool that reliably answers "is this topic growing or dying?" Use it before committing to a content cluster. Seasonality data alone will save you from publishing a summer guide in October.
5. PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse
Free Core Web Vitals scoring on real-user (field) and lab data. Lighthouse ships inside Chrome DevTools, so you can audit any page offline without sending it to a third party.
6. Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator
Both free. If you have added structured data for FAQs, products, recipes or articles, these tell you whether Google can actually parse it — before you wait weeks to find out from the search results.
Free technical SEO and site audit tools
7. Broken Link Scan
Our own tool, so weigh this accordingly — but it exists because nothing else did the job for free. Paste a URL and it crawls up to 500 pages with no signup, making real HTTP requests to verify every link, image (including srcset and <picture>), redirect chain and SSL certificate, then returns a health-score report. Browser-based, respects robots.txt, available in 12 languages. Run a free scan or read our comparison of broken link checkers if you would rather see how it stacks up against the alternatives.
8. Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free tier)
The classic desktop crawler. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs per site, which is plenty for a small site or a spot check. It is enormously powerful and correspondingly steep to learn, and because it runs on your machine, large crawls are limited by your own RAM. See our Screaming Frog comparison for where each approach fits.
9. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
Ahrefs gives verified site owners a free tier covering site audits and backlink data for their own properties. You cannot spy on competitors with it — that is the paid product — but for auditing your own site it is genuinely generous.
10. Bing Webmaster Tools
Free, chronically underused, and increasingly relevant now that Bing's index feeds several AI assistants. It also includes free keyword research data that is less gated than Google's.
11. The Wayback Machine
Free and indispensable after a migration or a redesign. When a page 404s, the Internet Archive usually still has the old content and the old URL structure, which is how you rebuild a redirect map you forgot to write down. See our migration checklist.
Free keyword and content research tools
12. AnswerThePublic
Free daily searches (the exact allowance changes; expect a small handful). It visualises the questions people ask around a seed term, which is the fastest way to find long-tail headings for an article.
13. Ubersuggest
A limited number of free searches per day. Volume estimates are rough, but the content-ideas view is a useful second opinion next to Keyword Planner.
14. Keyword Surfer
A free Chrome extension that overlays estimated search volumes directly on the Google results page. Estimates, not gospel — but it removes the friction of switching tabs to check a hunch.
15. Google Search itself
Not a joke. "People also ask", related searches, and the autocomplete dropdown are free, first-party signals about how a query is understood. Most competitor content briefs are reverse-engineered from exactly this.
Free browser extensions
16. Detailed SEO Extension
One click shows any page's title, meta description, canonical, headings, hreflang and structured data. The fastest way to audit a competitor page or catch your own missing canonical.
17. MozBar
Free with a Moz account. Overlays domain and page authority metrics on search results. Authority scores are third-party approximations, not Google metrics — useful for relative comparison, misleading if taken literally.
18. Web Developer / DevTools
Free and already installed. Disabling JavaScript and CSS to see what a crawler sees is still one of the highest-signal technical checks available, and it costs nothing.
Free SEO plugins for WordPress
19. Yoast SEO and Rank Math
Both have capable free versions covering titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs and basic schema. Pick one — running both causes conflicting output. Neither checks whether your links still resolve, which is a different job.
20. Tidy Broken Link Scan
A free WordPress plugin that brings whole-site broken link checking inside wp-admin, so you can find and fix dead links without leaving the editor. Our WordPress broken links guide walks through the workflow, and the plugin page has the install details.
21. Free HTTP and redirect utilities
Small single-purpose tools that save real time: an HTTP status checker for confirming what a URL actually returns, a redirect chain checker for finding the four-hop chains that leak link equity, and a bulk URL checker for validating a list of links in one pass.
What free SEO tools cannot do
Being honest about the ceiling saves you from expecting the wrong things:
- Competitor backlink analysis at depth. Free tiers show you a slice. Full link graphs are the actual product Ahrefs and Semrush sell, and no free tool replicates them.
- Rank tracking at scale. Search Console gives you average position, not daily rank for a tracked keyword set across locations and devices.
- Continuous monitoring. Almost every free tool is on-demand: it tells you the state of your site at the moment you ask. Nothing alerts you when something breaks next Tuesday.
- Large-site crawling. Free crawl limits sit around 500 pages. Past that, you are into paid tiers regardless of vendor.
That last pair is the honest reason paid tools exist. Our own paid plans add scheduled scans, alerts when a link newly breaks, export and history — but the 500-page on-demand scan stays free, permanently.
A free SEO stack that actually works
If you are starting from nothing, set these up in this order. It takes about an hour and covers most of what a small site needs:
- Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit an XML sitemap. Nothing else matters until this is done.
- Add Bing Webmaster Tools — it takes five minutes and imports your Search Console verification.
- Install Google Analytics 4, or a lighter privacy-friendly alternative if GA4 is more than you need.
- Run PageSpeed Insights on your three most important templates: home, category, article.
- Run a full broken link scan to clear out dead links and missing images before they compound.
- Install Yoast or Rank Math if you are on WordPress, and write real meta descriptions for your top 20 pages.
- Set a calendar reminder to repeat steps 4 and 5 monthly. Link rot is continuous; a one-off audit ages badly.
The short answer
The best free SEO tools in 2026 are still Google's own — Search Console first, by a wide margin. Everything else on this list fills a specific gap Google leaves open: crawling, link verification, keyword expansion, and on-page inspection. You can run a genuinely healthy small site on free tools alone. What you buy when you start paying is not better data; it is continuity — the monitoring, alerting and history that turn a one-off audit into something that keeps working while you are not looking.
Start with the free scan, fix what it finds, and add paid tooling only when a specific limit actually blocks you.
